Feminism: Maybe You Can But Should You (5/2/09)
Springing out of the chaotic 60s and 70s (too bad we can’t erase that time period) and following on the heels of the civil rights movement (again, not a fan) came feminism. Feminism was about girl power (no, that was the Spice Girls). It was about woman power. Ostensibly, feminism was about equality and choice (they thought that they should be more equal to men). How could something that sells itself as equality turn so wrong (i hate the term “equality”, in Economics classes they said there were two goals – conflicting as they were – equality and efficiency. Guess what one i am a fan of?). The Roe vs Wade ruling from this era was complete garbage (Feminism taken to the extreme, giving people choice over a natural phenomenon – when the choice had already been made). However this movement largely destroyed the nuclear family and life in a country that worked for at least a century. The sky high divorce rate is largely attributed to this movement (female empowerment is a dangerous thing, fundamentally shifting from the “we” view to the “me” view). Something that was supposed to be about choice actually destroyed choice for women. The traditional life was the Leave it to Beaver family where the father worked and the mother stayed at home. It worked then, i am here to say it could work again (this will come up in my Why the us Needs a Depression post that i haven’t made, if i ever actually make it). i am sure that there are women who would love to be the stay at home wife, but partially due to feminism they no longer have that choice.
Let’s break it down (sort of). Welcome to fragment sentence theater. Females enter the work force. Females make money (females fell more empowered like they don’t need males anymore). Females buy stuff. Cost of living goes up (as they do, more dollars chasing the same amount of goods). Females still tied to evolutionary forces and want offspring (humans are an animal, they can think a little, but there are evolutionary urges still at play). Females have children. Females can’t care for children all on their own. Daycare industry is born (ironically it gets to the point where by working; the female human may actually be costing the family unit money by working. Fast food industry blossoms). Women can’t afford to stay at home. Latchkey kids. World expensive, credit card debts soar. Though to be fair, conspicuous spending is the first thing that needs to be tackled.
Title 9. i can’t stand this (especially the implementation). This is used a lot for high school and college sports. This is theoretically about equality, but it is actually preferential treatment. If a sports program cannot survive on its own merits, it shouldn’t exist. i don’t believe any public funding should go to high school or college sports programs (they should be “athlete” sponsored or self-sustaining). There have been numerous cases where boys team have been cut because they need women’s teams under law. There have even been cases where a private donor wants to give money for a boy’s sports facility (but it falls apart because the females believe they should be entitled to their own facility too). Of course i find the term “women’s sports” to be somewhat of an oxymoron.
Humans are just animals (animals who think they are rational, how wrong are they). There are evolutionary roles for a reason. The female stays home with the offspring and raises them, cleans the cave, and gathers food. In modern day terms – raises the kids, runs the day to day operations of the house, goes to the supermarket and fixes meals. Now days, a female can work outside the home. That begs the question “should they”? This is not an easy answer. For some females (single and no kids), yes working may make sense. Put kids into the equation, though, and things can change. They key question here is “what is the woman’s priority”? Is her main priority her evolutionary responsibility, or is it her own gratification?
There is a definite problem arising though when females start to become more masculine (and define themselves not by who they are, but what they get paid to do). Females can’t do everything (neither can males, especially biologically). Companies should hire females though (there is an economic incentive). There are definite value choices that should be made on what people should do.
The country needs to take a long hard look at itself and get back to basics. Responsibility is key here (and debt is the enemy). This will not be easy (and might actually require a cataclysmic economic event). The US needs to get back to a place where there actually is a choice for women.
