Some potential spoilers from the light novels if you haven't read a recap of them. i only read recaps on a Wiki. Apparently another one releases at the end of this month. Ok, i'm a little twisted...
The first half of a potential anime season 3 seems interesting The White Lady leading to the fall of Lady Lishu. Later volumes should be condensed if turned into anime. The locust infestation and the Western country power struggle don't really interest me. Volume 13 seems to get more interesting (as it seems to get back to court politics/machinations/conspiracies).
At this point, Maomao probably knows too much to be allowed live a civilian life. Surprised they let her temporarily leave at the end of anime season 2 (expected). i would guess Luomen knew this when he made her take the physician assistant test.
Would any series do the below? Doubtful.
Now for my devious power play move by Empress Gyokuyou.
* Not sure how much power the Empress has, unless the Emperor agrees. A seemingly mild-mannered person like Lady Gyokuyou could become paranoid, vengeful, or almost evil with more power.
* She has Maomao installed as a high-ranking consort, maybe Virtuous Consort (Lady Lishu's former position), with the condition that Jinshi would inherit her upon the emperor's death. i suspect Gyokuyou would want Maomao to have a baby with the emperor to solidify her position as a consort. Of course, a daughter would be preferable. Is there a way she could find out to increase the chances of that? i assume that the emperor still has consorts even if he has an empress. Though the emperor doesn't seem to find her attractive, i suspect that with her knowledge of the erotic arts and with practice/experimentation, she could rival any courtesan in the Verdigris house in technique (given what she has to work with).
- Why? It would be a massive power play. It shows she has power - and installs a loyalist who poses no threat to her in a coveted position. It also prevents a more ambitious consort from getting the position. Could also be a bit of an alliance move with Lakan - to side with the empress to protect his daughter in an upcoming power struggle. Of course, the emperor would have to agree.
Secondly, it is also a power play showing Jinshi that she/emperor is in control (keeping him in check). The emperor gets Maomao's virginity (probably) and a minor heir (likely to be used in a political alliance later, especially if a female). If Jinshi is still into Maomao after that, Maomao would become leverage. If Jinshi isn't in to Maomao after that, he could be sent away - he is a huge potential liability in a power struggle.
Oh yeah, Jinshi and Maomao still act as trouble shooters for the emperor.
