So, i have been reading (a little bit) recently about Chris Hansen's purported desire to build an arena.
The plan's massive catch is the desire for both an NBA team (which he would try to buy) and an NHL team (which Hansen seems to have no interest in buying). i read that as an IFF contidion (if and only if). i really don't see that many relocation candidates on the market in either sport.
In the NHL (which seems to be giving their "i don't intend to let teams move" spiel - despite the whole recent Atlanta to Winnipeg thing), there are 2-3 candidates between now and 2015. It is kind of hard to find some of the lease information (as teams and arenas have a habit of being owned by the same holding companies). i guess there are a few other candidates that i haven't seen too (and a few - like Columbus who recently reached deals or St Louis that are in the process of being sold). i think the NHL may have overexpanded in the 90s into questionable markets. Basically, these teams will likely cost in the $150-200 million range. Ok, the targets i see are (in order of sick appeal to me):
1) Nashville Predators - the "local ownership" is having issues and the lease comes due at about the right time. The market is not sustainable long term (i'm not sure about Seattle for hockey either).
2) Phoenix Coyotes - the NHL seems determined to keep the team in AZ (even though it is a bad/unprofitable idea). The league owns the team.
3) New York Islanders - sure their lease expires in 2015 or so, but their plans for a new arena have been rejected (do they really need 3 teams in the NY/NJ area?)
NBA: there are a couple obvious NBA teams here (there are likely more than i currently realize). These teams will likely cost in excess of $300 million
* The Sacramento Kings - apparently they want to move to Anaheim. i think they have an important arena vote coming in March.
* The New Orleans Hornets - like the Coyotes of the NHL, they are owned by the league.
