Anime Musings: Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon

Now, for some thoughts on one of my favorite active anime.  i'm talking about Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in A Dungeon (otherwise known, and i'll refer to it here, as Danmachi).  Though the universe also includes a spin-off Sword Oratoria (and several other set in the same universe, some prequels).

One of the tropes i like in anime is a weak character becoming strong (i "grew up" playing JRPGs).  Other examples of this include Arifureta and Black Clover.

Seasons 1-4 are available on Hulu.

Background:

In this series, 14-year-old adventurer Bell Cranel started his career as an adventurer.  He was rejected by the familias (think of it as the adventurer family of a God, kind of like Magic Knighs guilds in Black Clover).  He bumped into a Goddess named Hestia who agreed to form a familia with him.

The adventurers fight monsters in a dungeon.  One day, a more powerful monster got away to the third floor and attacked level 1 Bell.  He was saved by a rising star of the Loki familia named Aiz (or Ais) Wallenstein.  As a result of being saved in the dungeon, he developed a rare skill that allowed him to gain stats/level up at an accelerated rate based off his feelings for his rescuer.

He went on the upper floors of the dungeon gaining stats and eventually party members.  One was a desperate supporter (Liliruca) who betrayed him.  Aiz, sent by Bell's guild advisor, saved Bell again.  But he didn't see who did it and rushed off to save Lili.  Next was a blacksmith (Welf) who joined his party to gain experience.

As a result of his fast levels, other familias start to take notice. One, the Apollo familia goes out of their way to force a war game, with the condition that Bell would be given to them.  His teammates joined his familia as did someone from another familia who felt guilty for leading monsters to them while running away in the dungeon.  Then he got a blacklisted adventurer as the last member of his team.  The war game was a seige event where they tried to attack a castle and take out the opposing "general".  The Hestia family won, and as a result the Apollo familia disbanded, and they got a huge house and money which was quickly spent.

He goes on other adventures, gains levels, and encounters more people/threats.  He also gains new followers slowly.  The scheming goddess Freya takes interest in him from almost the beginning (the payoff of that is season 5, i hear).  Glosses over a lot of plots/details on seasons 2-4.

Thoughts:

  • i like seasons 1 and 2.  i can't get into season 3 (Xenos arc).  Season 4 is decent (though a bit brutal).  Season 5 is: come on Hulu please show it soon.  Seasons 4 and 5 have more episodes than 1-3.  Probably better that way.  Though Season 4 had 2 parts to buy on Blu-Ray.
  • i think Bell's level should be at least the same as the season.  At the start of season 2 he should be at least level 2.  In season 6, should be level 6.
  • Assume the story would have at least 2+ more seasons.  The wait for Season 6 may take a while, but they could combine 2 light novels of Danmachi with 1 of Sword Oratoria to make it a little quicker.  Some say the light novel doesn't have enough content for another season (1 light novel or so short of content).
  • Magic in this series kind of sucks, i mean it is powerful - but most spells need chants that take a while to finish
  • Levelling: the part i don't like is that leveling requires some form of "feat" to get to the next level - not just experience based.  Many feats appear to be "punching above their levels".  So, unfortunately, they can't just "level grind".  Probably more difficult at higher levels.
  • He's not a playboy, but women are drawn to him (many wish they could be with him).  There is absolutely nothing wrong with a "harem" ending.  In a medieval world like that it shouldn't be uncommon.  There are not many good male options among adventurers. A higher status one like Bell would get more and more attention as he levels.  Both parties get something from the relationship.
  • Bell is young 14, but i assume that is considered an adult in Orario.  He can risk his life in a dungeon. Assume he can also sign binding contracts (which implies he can legally marry).
  • Apparently, some parts of the story are split between main and side (Sword Oratoria, following Aiz and her familia).  But that is a light novel issue that hasn't really reared its head yet - it is eventually supposed to.
  • The reader types say the anime leaves a lot out.  Don't they always?  i'm sure most of what they leave out doesn't really matter.
  • Another God needs to die - i recommend Hermes.
  • Will Bell meet Zeus (i know Zeus raised him for a while) and learn a little of his backstory (maybe a quest out of Orario)?
  • i kind of hope Aiz dies.  Partially because i think there are better relationship options than her. The Aiz centric fast leveling skill is relationship plot armor.  If he could hit level 7 before the end, he doesn't really need the powerup anymore.  She is such a damaged robot.
