Random Musings: Grinch, Barbie movie, etc.

So, what kinds of odd things have been going through my warped mind lately?

1) Grinch: what if the Grinch didn't wuss out and change his mind?

i know i expect the worst out of humanity (or Whomanity). This will be dark and non-Seussian (never been great at rhyme schemes anyway). Remember the Grinch took all of the Who's food ("leaving crumbs much too small for other Who's mouses"). Also took the log for the fire. In my mind, the Who society might have lasted a few days until they start getting depressed and giving into their Who primal proclivities. No food, no presents. How long would it have taken the Whos to resort to eating their pets or cannibalism?

2) Grinch and the Sequel book (spoiler):

i am far more familiar with the animated special than the book (though i think i have the book). i thought the Grinch was the villain - not the Whos like the Jim Carey movie said. i never got the anti-commercialism angle from the special.

How the Grinch Lost Christmas: completely unnecessary book. Rhyme scheme mostly there (though reused some from the original), a little off. Spoiler: the Grinch wanted to show the Whos he had Xmas spirit, so he participated in an Xmas tree decorating contest. He gets 2nd place and storms off. Cindy Lou Who (who was now 1 year plus two) won the competition with a tree decorated by ornaments made by all the Whos. The Grinch adds his ornament to the tree and celebrates with the town. Fade to black, forget this unnecessary book ever existed.

3) Barbie Movie: a feminist piece of crap. i knew before the opening credits stopped rolling (4 minutes in) what this would be. Starting with the jarring scene of girls smashing baby dolls heads. Then you get to America Ferrera's unhinged woe-is-me, women are the victim speech. Followed with her telling the Barbies how to destroy Kens. Barbies are everything, Kens are nothing.

No, this is not some reverse real-world scenario (flipped so the Kens in Barbieland represent women's power in the real world). One of the Barbies sure sounded/looked like a male pretending to be a female to me.

4) Do liberals live in an alternate universe. Sure seems to me they do.

5) Sweet! "Last Christmas" is on the radio (or Echo Dot streaming the radio). Not to be confused with "Previous Holiday" (though the videos are strikingly similar). While not a true Xmas song, it might have been the best off of "Music From the Edge of Heaven". George Michael had one of the best voices (i used to sing along to Faith and Make it Big trying to get as vocally close to him as possible). i think he died on Xmas day.

Extra credit: look up the song (or video) "Does She Love That Man" from Breathe. It is decidedly NOT upbeat. Kind of the reverse happy song - David Glasper has a pretty good voice too.

6) Xmas candy / Life Savers Story Book

Fricking expensive. i usually like Lifesavers, Mint M&Ms (they can be hard to find), Milk chocolate Lindor, Ferrero Rocher, caramel, chocolate orange, toffee, and Almond Roca.

Back in my day: Lifesavers Sweet Story Book used to be much different (not the 5 Flavor only mess it is today). There used to be 8-10 rolls consisting of: Butter Rum, Wild Cherry, Wint-O-Green, Pep-O-Mint, and 5 flavors. i hadn't had Butter Rum in the last couple of decades until several years ago they sold them at Walmart. Wint-O-Green used to spark in the dark and are readily available all year round. Wild Cherry are actually hard to find - i saw it once at retail (a dollar store) this millennium. i have to order those online

7) Yes, my Xmas tree is up (actually not one of my two) since Halloween. i borrowed my sister's tree as it has a smaller footprint and "my" space is kind of cramped. Using an Amazon smart plug on a routine to turn it on and off.

Kind of want to put popcorn garland on the tree (sans disgusting cranberries). Part of that is the smell harkens back memories of a much better/simpler time.

Outside: the lights that didn't fall off last year (and still work) are on a 4-hour timer (soon to be 6). Not sure i could still do some of the leaning ladder stuff i did in the past several years. My alleged mother got me an inflatable last year on clearance. It is a lot bigger than i though. Inflatables never seem to go up the same way twice (if not staked down).

8) Xmas:

Xmas really does come from a store, it perhaps doesn't mean much more. Not religious, but i believe in Santa Claus (even if he doesn't believe in me). i like the Rankin/Bass type mythology of Santa, Rudolph, Frosty. Twas the Night Before Christmas is underrated ("Even a miracle needs a hand").

I like the trees, the wreaths, the lights, etc... and especially the presents. Giving has never been my strong point (many potential minefields there). But in order for someone to give, someone has to receive - so i'm providing a service. Anyone out there who feels the need to give...

Unless you have kids (to live vicariously through), Xmas doesn't hit the same post teens. It feels kind of like a hollow holiday where you're just going through the motions, not the wonder i felt as a child, sneaking out of bed early to see what Santa had delivered.

The Jesus aspect never really hit for me (many believe if Jesus Christ actually existed, his birth would've been closer to Easter). Would Xmas still big if it were only a religious holiday? No.

9) Solstice:

This is the day i've set aside to give myself presents. Started several years ago when i went to Black Friday sales and bought stuff like Blu-Rays and video games for myself on slae. Since then, it has expanded to toys like retro-ish stuff and building sets (LEGO/MEGA).

This might be the last one i can do. It is getting too expensive and there is less and less each year on my wish list. i finally spent the stimulus and small inheritance from the sale of the grandparent's farm that my alleged mother let me have.

Sales the last couple of years have been kind of crap. Modern movies are also mostly garbage.
