So, what topic do I want to mention today? Well, if you read the title you would probably know.
Recently, there has been kind of a blow-up in the sports scene as the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers of Los Angeles (Donald Sterling) apparently said some potentially racist comment. You don't get enough money to own a professional sports franchise without being at least a little slimy.
Everyone strongly over-reacted (especially the NBA). It would be one thing if Sterling took out a full page ad in a paper or bought ad airtime on television. This instance was apparently an off the record personal comment to a girlfriend at the time. How do the courts view recording communications without consent?
Now for the non-politically correct part. Did the NBA go way too far with a lifetime ban? Yes. They should be sued and they should lose. What Sterling said (or was alleged to have said) is not a crime. This supposed comment(s) that blew up was not an "on the record" thing. If saying stupid things is a bannable offense, how does Mark Cuban still own a team? There is a highly annoying double standard for the NBA here - not to mention infringing on this particular owner's freedom of speech. The league should not be able to attempt to ban an owner for exercising free speech (especially an off the record type comment). There was no crime committed.
Professional sports owners jobs is to sign the paychecks - no more no less. I wouldn't care if Adolf Hitler owned a Jewish professional basketball team as long as he signed the checks (and no crimes like fraud, etc).
If Sterling would have lambasted white NBA players (do they still exist?) to a girlfriend that wouldn't even be an issue. But add in black or gay and everyone is all over the comment (from what I have seen, black are one of the more racist groups themselves). I guess part of that is extremely stupid part of the population know as "guilty whites".
Enough of this "racist" crap cry every time someone says something the could even be tangentially considered "racist). I don't get why people even care if they are considered "racist" by anyone else.
