Well, i have now had a Microsoft Surface RT tablet for about three weeks (since October 26th). So what have i been doing all of this time with it?
* Connection issues: the Surface RT like the Xbox 360 S before it seems to have big problems connecting with the Comcast/Arris TG862 gateway. i dislike that gateway and its garbage firmware so much. i can however connect to free wi-fi via the library.
* Playing some apps: sure there aren't a ton of apps out in the wild (and they tend to be more expensive in the Windows Store than anywhere else). i had to buy a couple of apps. i don't have Android or an Apple porduct, so these games are new to me. Wordament is by far my most played game.
- Wordament (free): this game is a somewhat addictive word search game. i am bad at it. This game si branded Xbox for Windows 8 and comes with achievements, but some of them are not cool. i got some of the more awful ones by playing in Arabic (i had no idea what the symbols or words i was using were).
- Cut the Rope ($4.99): This game is listed as "free" on the Windows Store, however it will only let you access the first box - if you want more you are going to have to pay (the $4.99 gives you free updates and unlocks the boxes). There might be a Windows 8 (sadly not RT version) branded as Xbox that has achivements.
- Flow Free (Free): This is a game where you connect colored dots with pipes (without crossing lines).
- Angry Birds Space ($4.99): It may be hard to believe i had never played an Angry Birds game until the Surface launched, but it is true. Basically this is a "physics" based game that seems really zoomed out in this version - it is basically drag to an angle and then release. i got stuck (some level with two pigs on a planet). This is branded Xbox on Windows 8 and comes with achievements
- Fruit Ninja ($4.99): i have played this game before (on the Kinect for Xbox 360). However, i do a little better in this version. If you haven't played, this is a swipe based game where you get to take revenge on fruit while avoiding the bombs. This is also branded Xbox for Windows 8 and has achievements. i didn't have any on the Kinect version, but i do have a couple on this version.
- Adera Episode 1 (Free): This is kind of a weird game. i guess i would describe this as part puzzle game and part exploration. It does have higher production values than many of the game apps out there for the Surface. Apparently there is supposed to be future episodes, but you will probably have to pay for them. This game is branded Xbox for Windows 8 and comes with achievements. i guess my Xbox account doesn't have achievements listed because i wasn't connected to the internet (stupid Arris gateway).
- Jetpack Joyride (Free): i tried this game out, but really suck at it. This is one of the few games that seems it would play better with a controller (but i haven't gotten very far in the game). This game is branded Xbox on Windows 8 and comes with achievements.
- Pinball FX 2 (Free, with paid downloadable Tables): This is somewhat like Pinball FX for the Xbox. However i think it controls worse. Basically, you tap on the left or right side of the screen (i think) to control the flippers. This is branded Xbox for Windows 8 and has achievements.
Apps:
-10/29 2,768 total/ 2,244 free
-11/6 3,720 total/ 2,977 free
i am hoping for more Xbox on Windows 8 type games with achievements (even if they are pricey). Solitaire, Tap Tiles, etc still do not have ARM support (so Surface can't use them).
Come on MSFT, give me a freaking pre-paid card option.
* Rumors: Xbox Surface - this was actually the tablet i would have liked overall. It is rumored to be a 7" tablet.
* Office RT (Home and Student 2013): i saw that the 582 MB (or so) update for this was listed as downloadable through Windows Update. However, when i tried it didn't download anything. After this update, i might start thinking about the touch cover accessory.
* Other: i need to find a case/sleeve for my Surface so it is easier to carry around (like to the library).
